About 2021 Gwangju Design Biennale

Theme

D'Revolution (Design Revolution)

The Gwangju Design Biennale (GDB) is a celebration of design, imagination, creativity, innovation, and application. We aim to showcase the latest design trends and exhibit the most recent concepts in a variety of areas by hosting forums where designers can share their views and discuss contemporary topics. This is an opportunity to exchange professional insights and areas of expertise within the international setting of the GDB.

In the 2021 Gwangju Design Biennale, various issues and stories will be presented in response to the theme of <D’Revolution>. While the first obvious referent of D’ is “design”, the use of the single letter D is intended to incorporate other related concepts including Data, Digital, Desire, Dimension, etc. These terms resonate now more than ever in our daily lives and on a global scale as a result of the recent pandemic crisis. The advent of COVID-19 has drastically transformed the way we live, connect, communicate, work, and play, and thus for many of us, we are actively seeking a positive change or a hopeful shift to overcome the sudden turbulence resulting from this pandemic.

One of the main goals of the 2021 GDB is to launch a “revolution” of positive change, hope, and healing to promote a future of promise, opportunities, and solutions. Contrary to the “revolution” of COVID-19 which has brought about “sudden, forceful changes” of 2020, the D’Revolution presented by the Gwangju Design Biennale 2021 is a message of optimism and strength in the knowledge that love and beauty through design can transcend all walls and barriers to embrace all races, genders, peaceful ideologies, cultures, and backgrounds to encourage all. Through this open call, we hope to discover the talents of the best and brightest local and international designers who are using their design skills to address the most relevant current and global issues.
